This weekend I worked with local photographer Adam Palmer to help shoot one of his weddings in Luana Hills in Kailua. It is always fun working with other talented photographers. On top of being an amazing wedding photogragher Adam has some of the coolest Hawaii fine art photography, you can check it out here or go to www.adamapalmer.com. The size of the pictures on his website do not do them justice, you have to see them blown up, they are stunning.

Annual Holiday Special

About 5 years ago when I started my career as a professional photographer, I also started to do a holiday special where I would have 10 families meet me at one location back to back. This made it possible for me to offer a discounted price per family. Now it has become a tradition for Holladay Photo as I have seen how much families enjoy having nice photos for their holiday cards. This year I will be photographing on November 8th at bathtub beach,(see the shoot below). Each session will last for 30 minutes and will include a CD with 25-50 high resolution images for $95. Over half the slots booked before I officially announced it, so if this day books up fast and I have the time I may offer an additional day. Check back for availabilty.

What's for Dinner

On top of being a photographer, I am also in charge of running our home, which includes cooking. I love to cook, its another creative outlet for me. This post is for the produce co-op I belong to. This dish, as I know it, is called kielbasie, the first time I was introduced to kielbasie was at the fairground in Delaware, (this is where I spent my high school days). Very basic ingredients: garlic, onion, bellpeppers red and green, Kielbasa Sausage. I start by throwing the peppers and kielbasa on the grill, and in a large hot pan put in butter, garlic, and the onions, and it really starts to smell good. When the peppers and kielbasa get a little black take them off the grill and chop them up and add to the onion mix. Let it all simmer together untill it looks like the pic below and them put it on some rice and enjoy.

I think the biggest part of my job is not taking pictures, in this digital world anyone can pick up a camera and get a good picture. I think the most important part of my job is to help families relax and be in their element and forget that I have a camera in hand. That is when I get the best shots and we have the most fun. This family was truly fun to photograph, and I love it when families want to get in the ocean.

Live Like Les

Lester Falatea is an amazing person, he was always upbeat and could make anyone laugh. If there was a bad vibe in the line up, as soon he paddled out it would dissipate. I think there must have been hundreds of people at his funeral and another 150 paddled out to show their respect for him at pipe, including some of the north shore heavy's. Here are a few shots I got from that day. For all the ways he's known as an incredible surfer, he is greatly loved as a wonderful husband and father- he will be missed by many.

Finally this event came to our area. It is a really fun and well organized event. Holladay Photo booth had a drawing on Friday and Saturday for a free photo shoot. Friday's winner was Ru Kalama and Saturday's winner was Kathy Pulotu.

There were many good cultural dances and songs performed.

Many cool people running the Halau Nalu booth, Patria was loving their saimin and it was 100 degrees all weekend.

I want to thank the woman of my dreams for supporting me and helping out this weekend.

It has been about 3 weeks since both of my kids started preschool and I have been able to spend more time working. Over the last four years I have been juggling being a stay at home dad (which I love) and a photographer. It has not been easy but very rewarding in both my family life as well as my professional life. I just want to thank all who have entrusted me with helping them preserve their memories- For example this darling family who I photographed last year and have now returned with a new addition. I love Patria! This last weekend was our 10 year wedding anniversary. I have to say the last 10 years of my life have been some of the most fun and exciting years of my life. She has helped me become a better husband, father and person. If it wasn't for her I would have never worked as a commercial diver, she is the one that talked me into getting PADI certified with her in Fiji. If it wasn't for her I would have never lived in NYC where I experienced the creative energy that started my career as a photographer. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be the person that I am today. Surf Club

Today was a fun day as I spent the afternoon with the local keiki surf club here in Laie, Halau Nalu, taking the kids to Goat Island on the hobie cat. On the last trip I tied off onto a buoy and got in the water to take a few shots of the kids. Here are some pics of our future professional surfers. I love this type of shoot, it gives me the chance to be creative in my editing and photograph an area I am passionate about. Halau Nalu is an amazing group and the people who dedicate their time and talents to creating and teaching in this surf club are truly incredible people. They just launched their website so you can get a taste of the good work, cultural legacies and Hawaiian language they are perpetuating, (soon there will be a link for people to make donations to help keep Halau Nalu growing and expanding).

Photo session with the lovely McCormick family. As you can see we had a lot of fun and I love the way these turned out. Often, I'm not a big fan of matching family outfits for photo shoots, BUT, I really think it worked beautifully with this family for the kinds of posing we did and the mood. White can be a color to avoid for photograph's, but don't you think this family pulled it off perfectly? Thanks guys for a fabulous photo shoot.

I haven't ventured into maternity shoots much. Here are some from a recent shoot. Good looking mom + Hawaii setting + good props and wardrobe = killer shots. I love the red chair. Something about red furniture...when we lived in NYC, we had a red velevet couch. When we left we turned it over to friend and photographer Jon Moe. He put it in his Manhattan studio, and we saw it turn up in one of his website portfolios- he put it to good use. Anyways, thanks Summer and Matt, it was a fun time! While in California I shot a few pictures of the Sacramento Temple. I had a few people ask me about purchasing a photo since there are currently none available of this new temple. My most recent senior photo shoot was with 'Ekolu - graduating this year from Damien Memorial School. I had such a great time photographing him! Not only is he one of the coolest guys I've shot this year, but he also rips on his Quad...as you can see in a couple of the pics below. At the end of the photo session- he even let me take the Quad out for a spin- he made it look easy, but I quickly found out, not so easy! Congratulations 'Ekolu!

I was wandering down the strip at Waikiki with my family and took these pictures. This first photo is of a hair and makeup artist, Cirialyn Valeriano, who is going to school at Ulupono Academy, a Paul Mitchell partner school. She's got style huh? The second street shot I slowed down my shutter a little. I love playing with light.

Here are some shots of Adam, Amy and their two sweet boys, Isaiah and Maddox. They have been here in Hawaii visiting. I snapped some shots of their family and headshots of Adam for his new website that I'm working on. He's going into practice as a chiropracter in Cameron Park, California. These are the first few pictures I took, I still have a lot more to play around with as I work on his website design. It's going to be a fun project! And he is an awesome chiropracter!

Children's Theater

What fun! I was asked to shoot the Performance of Cinderella by (CTO) Children's Theater of Hawaii. The cool thing about this theatrical organization is that everyone involved volunteers their time. The performance was fantastic as I was able to see it up close. I think there are still tickets available for today and Saturday shows. The first three sold out. I really enjoy the challenge of shooting performing arts, with the subjects in constant motion in a dimly lit auditorium I have to get a little more creative with lighting, but energy of show always makes up for any technical challenges.

Kuhio Day

Getting Engaged in Hawaii

I have done a lot of random types of photography, but last week was the first time I had to go incognito to capture an engagement. Michael asked me to document this special event, without the love of his life, Stacey, knowing what was going on. What a fun assignment! But I knew if I didn't get it the first time, I really couldn't ask him to do it again.

The big day came. Michael chose to propose at Halona Cove- a beautiful location commonly referred to as the blow hole on the south east side of Oahu. When shooting on the beach in Hawaii you can come across a number of different elements that affect the outcome of the photos. Wind, sea spray, cloudbursts, crowded beach, too much sun, not enough sun, all kinds of challenges. I arrived early to scope out the terrain. I found a spot I could stealthily shoot from and then I watched the happy couple arrive. I began to feel nervous- feeling some of what Michael was probably feeling! My pulse sped up a little as I watched the proposal unfold, (notice the ring behind his back!)

This is the first shot I took after Michael told Stacey that a photographer was documenting the whole thing!

Doesn't Ruby look like she's meditating here? I snuck up on her while she was gazing out at the ocean and snapped this picture. Children often do the cutest things when they don't think anyone is watching them. Some children enjoy being in front of the camera, others (like my kids) do not. All children like to play though, and that's when I get my best pictures, capturing them while they're having fun or relaxing.

North Shore Waves

I am mildly obsessed with surfing. My wife says I know way too much about various surfers in history and about surfboard construction. I can't help it, it's a topic I don't get sick of. My kids are doomed to a life of surf lessons, surf stories and wave watching. We recently went to watch the huge waves on the North Shore of Oahu. Rainy Days

As a stay at home dad, one of my favorite things to do is go on adventures with my kids. Simple adventures here on Oahu where we are lucky enough to live. Recently I didn't want to let the rain stop us from having fun. The kids put on their galoshes and off we went to find some big puddles. The puddles we found were more like small lakes, and the kids were in 7th heaven.

It was awesome working with this happy couple who were so excited to fly to Hawaii to get married. Enjoy the slideshow. It was touching to get a note several weeks later letting me know some of their thoughts. I love my job.

Kahuku Red Raiders

I played basketball in high school. Hoosiers is one of my favorite movies. I was excited when one of the basketball coaches from Kahuku high school invited me to shoot their annual free throw contest. Its always challenging to shoot in a gym, as anyone who has kids who plays any indoor sports knows. Here are few of the shots.

Ordinary Miracle

The song Ordinary Miracle by Sarah McGlauglin is a family favorite. We first heard it when the credits rolled on one of my daughter's favorite movies "Charlotte's Web." When I was putting together a slideshow for this family, it seemed like the perfect song. I love seeing happy and tired new parents with their little miracle.

From the Fijian Village!

About a month ago I shot these two brothers at the Polynesian Cultural Center. This is a slide show of the shoot. The music is Black Rose from Fiji. These two boys were full of excitement, in any village we visited they would jump on stage and start dancing or playing the drums. They sure are talented boys.

Water Housing

I just picked up a new water housing. I had to do a few modifications so it would work with my Canon. First, I put latches on the side to hold down the port, and then I drilled the port so I could feed a wire from the trigger switch in the handle to the camera. I did a test run Friday and no leaks. Saturday I photographed the Hau'ula crew surfing V-Land at the crack of dawn. Here are a few photographs from that session. I was shooting with a 19mm lens.
